Have you heard the story of the Santa’s helpers in Ribe?
It is said that they arrived in the town at the same time as the first traders – as far back as the 700s, when Ribe was founded.
In those days, the Santa’s helpers lived along the river, keeping an eye on ships and goods, and some even believe it was they who helped make Ribe such a thriving trading town.
Over the years, they have lived in the town’s little houses, in the loft above the baker’s shop, and in the cellar of the brush maker.
They have been here through storm floods and the building of the dykes – and yes, even the renovation of Ydermøllen is said to have involved a few Santa’s helper fingers. Four fingers on each hand, mind you – but that is more than enough when you are a true Santa’s helper in Ribe
Even today they still keep a watchful eye on the town, and if you look carefully, you might just catch a glimpse of a tiny shadow in a window or hear footsteps above your head on Christmas Eve…
