A thousand-year-old Egyptian preservation technique is given new life in the hands of the Danish brand Floral Affairs. A rethinking of what flowers can be – and how we bring color and life into modern spaces in a more sustainable way.
How it works:
– The flower is harvested
– The flower’s natural sap is replaced with plant-based glycerin
– 8–10 months of durability
– No water or sunlight required
Today, the flower industry is characterized by short lifespan, global transportation, and the intensive use of pesticides. An average bouquet emits between 25–37 kg of CO₂, and studies show that fresh flowers often contain residues of up to 90 different pesticides.
These are the numbers and conditions Floral Affairs seeks to challenge.
Behind the company is 28-year-old entrepreneur Adam Juel Bergmann, who through seven years in the industry became deeply aware of the darker side of flower production.
“Flower production is one of the largest and most significant sources of pollution that has so far survived consumer rejection. Flowers are powerful symbols of life and love, and these life-affirming, colorful plants have a sublime ability to bring life into the spaces they inhabit.
But behind the beautiful surface lies a heavy burden on major ecosystems, and in parts of the production process, human lives are also lost under dangerous and irresponsible working conditions.
We use flowers for countless occasions where we wish to express emotion as an extension of ourselves. Throughout history, humanity has used flowers to celebrate, to mourn, to love, and to remember – and we will continue to do so. Our mission at Floral Affairs is to change the way we consume flowers, by giving each flower a longer life – and the world a lighter footprint.”
