Myths about perfume
arrow_backTo the overview07 January 2025 | Single Flowers Perfume
There are many myths in perfume - here we share a few :)
- Perfume is genderless - Cologne is not for men, but an indicator that the concentration in the perfume is lower approx. 2-4%, whereas an Eau de parfum contains 15-25% oil/absolute in the formula. In addition, a "men's fragrance" will always end up smelling sweet on a woman due to estrogen and vice versa if men use a "women's fragrance" - it is precisely for this reason that the unisex section is growing.
- Almost no perfumes consist of just one single flower - they are often cleverly designed to put one flower in focus. In reality, 'single note' or 'Soli fleur' fragrances can contain up to 200 different ingredients. So when you think you know what a Tiare flower smells like because you have a Tiare perfume, you can't be so sure, there could easily be all sorts of other scents and molecules involved, unless you are talking about the pure natural oil from the flower.
- Many flowers do not actually smell of anything, or the flower is so volatile/sensitive that the oil cannot be successfully extracted so that it can be used for perfume - it could be flowers like Cherry Blossom, Orchid, Lily of the Valley, Violet, Freesia, Peony, Dahlia, etc. etc. - if these scents ''exist'', then it is a chemist who has defined/designed the scent of the flower.
- a perfume is only "safe" if you can see what the word 'Perfume' covers in the declaration. Many synthetic molecules have been on the market for such a short time, that we do not yet know what the consequences of the molecule are for our water and body.
- Several natural perfumes that claim naturalness/ecology/ecocert may consist mainly of organic alcohol to achieve the necessary natural percentage. The perfume itself, which is the low percentage, may be synthetic.
- There are people who believe that expensive perfumes are better perfumes - not necessarily. Branding, marketing and packaging play a big role in the perfume industry.
- Perfumes can actually smell differently from person to person depending on several factors: e.g. gender, skin pH, hormone levels, age, climate, scent inheritance, medication, diet, etc. etc.
- There are people who believe that the higher the perfume concentration, the better the product - it is a matter of taste - you will naturally use less of Extrait de Parfum than Eau de Toilette.
- Perfume evaporates according to the perfume percentage in the perfume - this is partly true - but it is further proven that perfume evaporates faster on dry skin. If you have dry skin, it is recommended to use solid perfume. In addition, the use of base notes (the larger molecules) will be crucial for the duration of the perfume.
