In modern Polynesian culture, the flower may be worn by women to indicate their relationship status - over the right ear if they are seeking a relationship and over the left if they are taken. Among the Mayans, Frangipani was associated with gods representing life and fertility, and the flowers were also strongly associated with female sexuality.
