From waste to wonder

The Story Collection began where most design processes end — with waste.
A Danish kitchen countertop manufacturer routinely set aside solid oak plates that didn’t fit into production. For many, these offcuts were simply surplus. For us, they became the spark of a new direction.
Instead of sketching toward a predetermined form, we allowed the material to guide us. The oak’s thickness, dimensions, and natural character shaped the geometry, leading to a language of balance, repetition, and calm tactility. This shift — from controlling the material to collaborating with it — became central to the collection.
Each piece carries an understated presence. Soft transitions invite touch, while the construction reveals rather than hides the material’s history. The result is a series defined by honesty and quiet confidence.
But its deeper value lies in its circular logic. Because the offcuts come in consistent quality and measurements, the collection can be produced efficiently without the need for new raw materials. The Story Collection is not just made from surplus — it is designed to work with it.
At a time when interiors embrace wellness, texture, and personal expression, these objects offer a grounded counterpoint: warm, minimal, and connected to the origins of their material.
What began as industrial waste has become a new narrative in contemporary furniture — one that proves responsibility and beauty can share the same source.

2nd Source Studio

2nd Source Studio is a Danish design studio that creates aesthetic, long-lasting products from industrial surplus and leftover materials. We operate under a simple philosophy: good design should not only be beautiful – it should also be responsible.
Drawing on Scandinavian design traditions and a playful, experimental approach, we develop furniture and interior products that give new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste. Each product combines tactile quality, strong storytelling, and a design process where transparency and honesty are core values.
We share the entire process op
