Discover 7 design experiments developed by AAU Design Lab in collaboration with brands such as FDB, Fritz Hansen, and Norr11
The exhibition can be experienced between the West Entrance and Hall J1.
In A Material Turn, design, resource responsibility, and material innovation come together. Through a series of circular design experiments developed by AAU Design Lab in collaboration with leading Danish design brands, conventional perceptions of value, quality, and aesthetics are challenged. The exhibition demonstrates how creativity can transform waste into meaningful products. It is a space for ideas, courage, and experimentation, where the hidden potential of materials is revealed through authentic designs with character.
The exhibition presents seven design experiments created in partnership between AAU Design Lab and renowned Danish brands, including FDB, Fritz Hansen, and Norr11. It showcases how materials that would normally be discarded or regarded as imperfect can become the foundation for innovative design solutions. Here, waste is not a limitation but a resource — and a catalyst for innovation.

How do we redefine material responsibility and imperfection through design? This panel brings together designers, brands, and industry voices to discuss materials, aesthetics, and responsibility. Grounded in real design experiments created by AAU Design Lab and Danish furniture brands, the conversation explores how production waste and imperfections can drive innovation—and what it takes to create meaningful change in the furniture industry.
Panelists
Fritz Hansen: Patrick Runge Clausen, Head of Sustainability and Compliance
Norr11: Ludvig Kjærulff, CEO
Bolia: Jens Nørgaard, Product Manager
Mikkel Huse Studio: Mikkel Huse, Industrial Designer and Owner
AAU Design Lab: Linda Nhu Laursen, Head of Design Research

Drawing on the classic principles of Danish design – honesty, functionality, and respect for materials and craftsmanship – the exhibition and panel debate explore how these values can be reimagined in a time of increasing demands for responsible production. The ambition is both practical and visionary: to connect new material strategies with industrial realities and commercial relevance.
By bringing together key players from the furniture industry, the exhibition in particular points towards new directions for the sector. It is an exploration of how design can renew its own foundations while contributing to the global agenda for responsible production and consumption.
