SKYGGE (Danish for ‘shadow’) is an exclusive, handcrafted serving tray made from solid oak, designed and created by Troels Schack, who owns the Aarhus-based furniture and design studio TAPGANG.
The elegantly shaped handles lift the tray slightly off the surface, creating a floating effect and shadow, which is also the inspiration behind the name.
»When I started sketching the designs for SKYGGE, I had this idea of making a tray that floats – or looks like it’s floating. I hadn't seen that before, and I was pretty sure it would look great«, says Troels Schack.
The tray comes with handles in either oak or walnut, and the handles are made from a single piece of wood to ensure a simple and balanced design. Every little detail is carefully considered – from the decorative and functional contrasts between the wood types to the fine brass screws that adorn the underside of the tray. Function and design should always go hand in hand, Troels Schack believes:
»If beautiful handmade ceramics, elegant glasses, or a really inviting dish on a stylish plate are served on a tray that is primarily designed with function in mind, it can detract from both the aesthetics and the experience. Why not make it perfect from start to finish? That’s why I work to ensure my furniture enhances and elevates the beauty of what you already own«, he says.
Thus, SKYGGE combines classic geometries with an innovative approach to function and design and can be used for a wide range of purposes. It works perfectly as a breakfast tray on the bed, an evening tray with wine and snacks, or as an elegant way to transport tableware and food to the dining table – whether it needs to be carried out to the balcony, into the garden, over to a neighbor, or to a guest at a restaurant.
The tray can also serve as a decorative object on a shelf or wall. It can be a platform for candles, an organized space for small items, jewelry, or anything else. Only your imagination limits how SKYGGE can be used.
