mumutane - nordic design african tradition
mumutane designs and sells graphic and colorful home accessories in a cross-over between Nordic and African design to show how two different design traditions can use each other and create something different and unique.
The product range is primarily decorative throw pillows, bags and kimonos of a high, craftsmanship quality. The assortment also consists of vases and flower pot covers produced in textiles as well as other small accessories.
In addition to our own mumutane products, we sell affordable art pieces which includes fascinating and graphic masks and wall decor inspired by African tradition and designed and produced by Umasqu in Tel Aviv. We also sell soft and heavy woolen blankets from South Africa which have kept shepherds warm in the mountains for more than 100 years.
mumutane's concept focuses on sustainability, minimising textile waste, social responsibility and fair conditions for all. Therefore, the collection is built around materials being purchased from small business owners in Africa to support local development. The fabrics are, as far as possible, surplus textiles and all materials in our production are used. We are inspired by the give work philosophy and therefore some of the products are produced by a local tailor in Abuja with the ambition to create work and better conditions for young women. In addition, production also takes place via a social economy company, which helps to create work for an otherwise vulnerable group in Denmark.
In mumutane we dream that we in the Nordic countries will be more courageous both purely aesthetically - without compromising our Scandinavian design tradition - and also in terms of entering into collaborations that are different from the conventional in order to create a greater coherence in the world.
Behind the name mumutane, which is a contraction of two words 'mu mutane' and means 'we humans', is a philosophy that we collaborate across both cultures and borders to create better conditions for more people.
